In woodworking machinery servicing, the most expensive part isn't the parts themselves, but time. A mismatched bearing, belt, knife, sensor, or control module can halt production for several days, and sometimes trigger a cascade of further failures. The problem is that in woodworking machinery, the differences between seemingly identical components can be minimal: a shaft diameter of just 0.5 mm, a different hole spacing, a different software version, a different seal, a different connector type. Ordering based solely on a photo or generic name usually results in a return, rework, or another downtime.

1. Identify the machine without abbreviations: manufacturer, model, type, year, serial number

The most common mistake is ordering parts for a model that sounds similar. In the woodworking industry, there are many versions of the same machine: a sliding table saw with several table versions, an edge bander with several unit heights, a CNC with different spindles. Differences in the serial number can indicate a different bearing type, a different electronics module, different guides, or different safety guards.

If you have a nameplate, take a photo of it and copy the data. If the nameplate is illegible, look for documents: instructions, declarations, acceptance protocol, purchase invoice, labels in the control cabinet, stickers on the motor or inverter. In the case of CNC controls, the version numbers of the controller, axis drives, and operator panel are also crucial.

For example, on an edge banding machine, "glue problem" could indicate a heater, temperature sensor, SSR relay, safety thermostat, dirty nozzle, poor calibration, or a PLC error.
